Carlos Barbagallo is eager to chat about the winning technology that has transformed the import operation he established in 2004. For the first decade Barbagallo imported goods from Argentina (flower pots, alternative metal serveware) bringing in a pallet at a time which he sold to mom & pop sops and discount stores. “I knew the Argentina market well,” he says, ” and carved a nice niche buying and selling off-price products”. But when the global recession struck, Barbagallo recognized that Argentina’s costly production would be a challenge and opted for offshore sourcing, moving production to India. “I learned early on in business that sometimes you don’t have options” he says. “You have to change or die”.
